Colombo Airport to Hikkaduwa, Galle & Ahangama: what it actually costs
Every option explained honestly. The expressway run takes about 2.5 hours. Here is how to do it without getting overcharged or confused at arrivals.
Honest disclaimer: I run a private transfer service on this route, so I have skin in the game. I will still tell you when a private transfer is not the right choice for your situation. Read the full options below before deciding.
The route: BIA to the south coast
Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) sits near Negombo on Sri Lanka's northwest coast. Hikkaduwa and the south coast are on the opposite side of the island. You are not driving through Colombo to get there. You skirt around it via the E01 Southern Expressway.
The entire journey runs on the Southern Expressway — a controlled-access highway with no traffic lights, no intersections, and no Colombo city traffic at any point. Journey time is consistently around 2.5 hours regardless of when you arrive. The only variable is a few minutes of local road at the start and at your destination exit.
Which exit for which destination
Baddegama interchange: Hikkaduwa and Narigama
Galle interchange: Galle Fort, Unawatuna, Thalpe, Ahangama, Mirissa, Weligama, and Matara

When you should not book a private transfer
If you are a solo backpacker travelling light with no fixed check-in time, a private transfer is not worth 55-65 EUR. Take the airport express bus to Colombo Fort, then the intercity train south. It takes longer, but the coastal train ride is genuinely one of the best parts of a Sri Lanka trip.
If your first night is in Colombo or Negombo, just use PickMe from the airport. Private transfers make the most sense for the full south coast run: Hikkaduwa, Galle, Unawatuna, Mirissa, Weligama, Ahangama and the villages in between.
Why the south coast run is different from a city taxi
The Southern Expressway has tolls. A PickMe driver will add those at the end if they have not stated them upfront. The official airport counter quotes before tolls. A pre-booked all-inclusive transfer removes that uncertainty completely.
You have just landed after a long-haul flight. The arrivals hall has touts, competing offers, and no obvious single answer. Having a driver waiting with your name on a sign, knowing exactly what you paid, makes the first hour in Sri Lanka much easier.
The transfer I offer
I am based near Hikkaduwa and do this run regularly. The price I charge tracks the current PickMe app rate for the same route, which sits between 50 and 65 EUR all-inclusive in 2026. That covers tolls, parking, and fuel. Nothing added at the end.
New air-conditioned vehicle
Clean, comfortable, with space for airport luggage. Not a shared van or an ageing estate car.
Flight tracking included
Delayed or early, your driver adjusts. No extra charge, no rebooking, no waiting around in uncertainty.
English-speaking local driver
I live near Hikkaduwa. If you want honest tips on where to eat or what to skip on the south coast, ask.
Returns at the same rate
South coast to BIA for your departure, same all-inclusive price, booked whenever you are ready.
Areas covered: Hikkaduwa, Narigama, Galle Fort, Galle city, Unawatuna, Thalpe, Ahangama, Mirissa, Weligama, Dodanduwa, Rathgama, and nearby coastal locations.

Get a SIM in the arrivals hall
Dialog and Mobitel counters are inside BIA arrivals. Buy one there. Do not assume European roaming works reliably south of Colombo. It often does not. Read our SIM card guide for which network to pick.
Withdraw cash at the airport ATM
Most private transfers are settled in cash on arrival. HNB and Commercial Bank ATMs inside BIA work best with European cards. Withdraw enough for the transfer plus your first day. See our money and ATMs guide.
Journey time is the same any hour
The Southern Expressway is a controlled-access highway — no traffic lights, no intersections. You are not passing through Colombo city at any point. Whether you land at 2am or 2pm, the transfer takes the same 2.5 hours.
Confirm the price is all-inclusive
Before you confirm any transfer, ask explicitly whether tolls and airport parking are included. If the driver says "we settle at the end," the answer is no. Walk away or get it in writing via WhatsApp first.
Share your trip on WhatsApp
If you are travelling alone, share your live WhatsApp location with someone at home once you are in the vehicle. Standard precaution, same as anywhere in the world.
Departure transfers need early pickup
For flights before 8am, expect a 4am to 4:30am pickup from Hikkaduwa to reach BIA comfortably. It sounds brutal but the expressway at that hour is completely clear. You will make it with time to spare.
Common questions
Between 50 and 65 EUR all-inclusive in 2026. This covers Southern Expressway tolls, airport parking, and fuel. The price tracks the current PickMe app rate for the same route. Nothing is added at the end.
Consistently around 2.5 hours, any time of day. The entire route runs on the Southern Expressway so there is no Colombo city traffic at any point. Galle adds roughly 15 minutes past Hikkaduwa. Ahangama is a few minutes further. Mirissa and Weligama add around 20 to 30 minutes south of Galle.
Hikkaduwa uses the Baddegama interchange on the Southern Expressway. For Galle, Unawatuna, Ahangama, Mirissa, and Weligama, the exit is the Galle interchange. If you are navigating yourself on a future trip, do not follow apps blindly as some route you off the expressway earlier than needed.
There is no direct bus. You would need to reach Colombo's Bastian Mawatha bus terminal first, then catch an intercity bus south. With luggage after a long-haul flight, this takes 5 hours minimum across two connections. Not practical. The train from Colombo Fort is a better budget option if you are travelling light and have time.
The touts outside arrivals are unmetered and will negotiate fares. Some are fine, but there is no fixed pricing and quality varies. The official airport taxi counter inside the terminal is safer and quotes upfront, though rates for the south coast run tend to be higher than a pre-booked transfer once tolls are factored in. For a 2.5-hour journey with luggage after a long flight, arriving at a pre-arranged driver is worth it.
A pre-booked transfer includes flight tracking. Your driver adjusts to your actual landing time at no extra cost. This is one of the main practical advantages over booking at the airport on arrival, where a delayed flight means a long wait or starting over.
