SIM Cards and Internet in Sri Lanka
How to stay connected without the roaming fees.
The first thing you do: Buy at the airport
As soon as you clear customs at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), you will see the mobile provider counters. This is the easiest and most reliable place to get your SIM.
You buy directly from the official carriers. No third parties, no extra commissions. The staff will register the SIM using your passport and activate the data plan before you leave the counter. It takes less than five minutes.
Local Tip
Do not buy SIM cards from random shops on the street if you can avoid it. Airport counters are set up specifically for tourists and ensure your passport is scanned correctly for immediate activation.
Dialog vs Mobitel vs Hutch
There are three main players. For most European travellers, the choice is between Dialog and Mobitel because of their superior coverage in rural areas.
Dialog: The market leader. It has the best coverage in the Hill Country and remote beaches. If you are going to Ella or Sigiriya, this is usually the safest bet. You can check their official tourist plans here.
Mobitel: The state-owned provider. Coverage is nearly identical to Dialog. They often offer better unlimited packages for heavy users.
Hutch: Generally cheaper, but coverage is focused on cities and suburbs. If you are staying in Colombo or Galle, it works perfectly. In the mountains, you might struggle for a signal.
Tourist Data Plans (2026)
Prices are inclusive of taxes. Most plans are valid for 30 days and cost less than a coffee in Europe. If you need to reload later, you can pay easily with cash if you understand how ATMs and money work in Sri Lanka.
| Provider | Data Bundle | Approx. Price (EUR) |
|---|---|---|
| Dialog | 20GB | 4 EUR |
| Dialog | 30GB | 5 EUR |
| Mobitel | 15GB (7 Days) | 2 EUR |
| Mobitel | 30GB | 5 EUR |
| Mobitel | Unlimited Data | 15 EUR |
Broadband for Digital Nomads
If you are working remotely or staying long-term, mobile hotspots might not be enough. Sri Lanka has excellent Fiber and 4G LTE options for home use.
SLT Mobitel Fiber
This is the fastest internet available in the country. It is widely available in cities and major tourist hubs. Speeds reach up to 300Mbps.
A popular choice for foreigners is the Unlimited Home package. It provides a stable, high-speed connection for video calls and streaming for around 24 EUR per month after government taxes.
4G LTE Routers
Offered by both Dialog and SLT Mobitel. These are plug-and-play boxes. You buy the device, plug it into a wall socket, and you have Wi-Fi. It is a great alternative if your villa or guesthouse does not have a Fiber line yet.
Quick answers
Yes. Both Dialog and Mobitel offer eSIMs at the airport. This is perfect if you want to keep your European SIM in your phone for banking OTPs while using local data for everything else.
Generally, no. Standard social media, news sites, and streaming services work freely. Occasionally, during periods of civil unrest, the government may temporarily restrict social media, but this is rare.
Download the official carrier app. You can link your international card and buy extra data instantly. You can also buy scratch cards at almost any small grocery shop (kade) across the island.
