Do not book a hotel here expecting tourist infrastructure
Dodanduwa has no beach clubs, no avocado toast cafes, and very limited accommodation. If you want a comfortable beach holiday with amenities, stay in Hikkaduwa and visit Dodanduwa as a day trip.
Every day, thousands of travellers speed along the coastal road between Hikkaduwa and Galle. Almost none of them stop here. It is a genuine working fishing community that is not performing authenticity for visitors.
Dodanduwa has two completely different environments sitting within walking distance of each other. On the ocean side, a clean sandy beach with dramatic rock outcrops. On the landward side, a vast, mirror-calm lagoon where no motor boats are permitted.
Two worlds, one bridge
Beach & Rock Islands
Sandy shores, working fishing boats, and the dramatic Polgasgala rock formations. Perfect for a quiet swim and sunset.
The Silent Lagoon
A motor-free sanctuary of silence. Kayak through mangroves, spot giant monitor lizards, and visit the historic Island Hermitage.
Doing both in one day
Lagoon at Dawn
The lagoon is most alive in the early morning. Paddle into the mist as the sun comes up. If you are respectful, you can paddle near Polgasduwa, the island that houses the Island Hermitage Buddhist monastery. Wildlife activity peaks at dawn with fruit bats returning to roost and monitor lizards warming on the banks.
Beach and Swimming
Walk to the beach (10 minutes from the bridge) and spend the middle of the day swimming in calm water. There are no beach facilities, which is the point.
Sunset at Polgasgala
The fishing boats return around 5pm. Watch the catch come in, then wade out to the Polgasgala rock for the sunset. The golden light on the rock is the definitive image of Dodanduwa.
How to get here
From Hikkaduwa or Galle, take bus 388/1 or 388/3 and ask for the Dodanduwa bridge stop. Look for the iconic fishing boats moored at the bridge.
