Why Visit Kandy?

Kandy is the last royal capital of the ancient kings. This UNESCO World Heritage city sits in a natural bowl of forested hills surrounding a serene lake. At its heart stands the Temple of the Tooth Relic, one of Buddhism's most sacred sites globally.

For European travellers, Kandy is the perfect introduction to Sri Lanka's rich culture. The city features colourful markets, excellent local food, and cooler evenings. It is also the perfect launching pad for a day trip to the ancient rock fortress of Sigiriya.

The city centre reality

Do not arrive expecting a quiet mountain retreat. Kandy city centre is highly congested, smoggy, and noisy. Traffic around the lake during rush hour is terrible.

If you want peace and clean air, you must book a hotel up in the surrounding hills rather than right in the busy valley centre.
