Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka
The honest month-by-month guide for European travellers.
Honest Weather Warning: Do not trust generic internet weather apps showing rain icons over Sri Lanka every day. Tropical islands have highly localized microclimates. If you book a beach holiday on the southwest coast during the peak monsoon months thinking it will be dry, you will spend your trip stuck inside.
The Short Answer
For the classic circuit (Colombo, Kandy, Ella, South Coast), the best period is December to April. If you are heading to the East Coast (Trincomalee), the best time is May to September. Sri Lanka is a year-round destination: the key is knowing which coast to be on.
Understanding the Two Monsoons
Southwest Monsoon (Yala)
May to September
Affects Colombo, Galle, Mirissa, Ella, and Kandy. Expect heavier rain and rough seas on the south and west coasts. This is the best time for the East Coast.
Northeast Monsoon (Maha)
October to January
Brings rain to Trincomalee and the North. During this time, the southwest coast is basking in dry, sunny weather.
