Riverston: The windy edge of the Knuckles Mountain Range
Foggy motorbike roads, extreme winds, and stunning grassland drops. An easy day trip if you are coming from Kandy or Nuwara Eliya.
Why Visit Riverston?
Most tourists flock to Ella for mountain views, but the Knuckles Mountain Range offers something much wilder. Riverston sits right on the edge of this protected reserve, offering incredible, panoramic drops without the heavy crowds.
The journey here is just as good as the destination. The closest city is Matale, a hub of rich Tamil culture. From there, the road winds up into the mountains, narrowing into a beautiful, misty track surrounded by dense greenery.
It is the perfect addition to your itinerary if you are already travelling through the central highlands near Kandy. You can check the region's broader environmental significance on the Sri Lanka Tourism official site.
A quick reality check
Do not rent a scooter in Kandy and expect an easy cruise up here. The weather turns violent without warning, and the dense mountain fog often reduces visibility to zero. Only ride a motorbike if you are highly experienced.
Also, do not arrive in the afternoon. The fog completely blocks the view by midday, making the entire hike pointless. Always arrive before 9am.

The Route and The Ride
Travel to Riverston is relatively easy, but the method of transport completely changes the experience. There are no ATMs in the mountains, so read our cash guide and bring small notes.
The Motorbike Experience
Using a motorbike is highly recommended for skilled riders. The road upwards is narrow, incredibly green, and often wrapped in a cool fog. It gives you a completely immersive vibe compared to sitting inside a car.
Matale Food Stop: Because Matale has a strong Tamil heritage, it is the perfect place to stop before or after your hike. Make sure to enjoy some traditional Tamil food in the town.
The Main Attractions
1. Riverston Peak
When you arrive at the start point, there is a small parking area and a few shops selling water and small snacks. You purchase a small ticket here, and then it is a roughly 2km walk uphill to the peak.
The Wind Warning: Riverston acts as a massive natural windbreak. The winds at the top can be surprisingly strong, so hold onto your hats and cameras.
2. Pitawala Pathana
If you are driving from the Matale side, you will hit the Riverston start point first. Keep driving just a few kilometres forward on the same road, and you will reach Pitawala Pathana.
This is a unique, flat grassland that suddenly ends in a sheer cliff drop. It is a very easy, quick hike and arguably the best location in the area for impressive photos.

If you are currently staying on the South Coast (Hikkaduwa, Galle, or Mirissa) and need a reliable, comfortable transfer up to Matale, Kandy, or the Riverston area, I can arrange it directly for you.
