Sigiriya: Sri Lanka's ancient rock fortress
Ascend the 5th-century citadel where art, architecture, and engineering meet in the heart of the Cultural Triangle.
Why Visit Sigiriya?
There are ancient sites, and then there is Sigiriya. Rising 200 metres straight out of the flat jungle plain, this extraordinary 5th-century rock fortress is one of the most dramatic archaeological sites in all of Asia.
Built by King Kashyapa, Sigiriya was simultaneously a royal palace, a military fortress, and an artistic masterpiece. You can still see exquisite frescoes of celestial maidens painted on the sheer cliff face halfway up.
For European travellers, Sigiriya is the highlight of the Cultural Triangle. Ensure you check the latest archaeological updates on the Sri Lanka Tourism official site before planning your route.
The crowd factor
Do not arrive here at 10am. You will be stuck in a literal human traffic jam on the exposed metal stairs, baking in the 32-degree heat. You must start your climb at 7am sharp to beat the massive tour groups.
If you refuse to pay the 28 EUR entry fee, climb the neighbouring Pidurangala Rock for 5 EUR instead. It offers the exact same panoramic views, plus you actually get to see Lion Rock in your photos.
