Mirissa: Sri Lanka's whale watching capital

A perfect crescent of golden sand and the best place in the ocean to see Blue Whales in the wild.

Best time: Nov to April Avg temp: 30°C Wildlife: Blue Whales Train: 2.5hr from Colombo Budget: From 25 EUR/night

Why Visit Mirissa?

Mirissa genuinely lives up to the photographs. It features a sweeping crescent of golden sand lined with coconut palms and warm turquoise water. From November to April, Blue Whales regularly appear just a few kilometres offshore.

Fair warning

Many cheap whale watching operators are unethical, choosing to chase and crowd the animals with noisy engines. Always research and book an eco-certified operator who follows the Sri Lanka Tourism distance guidelines.

Do not underestimate the ocean swell. If you are prone to motion sickness, take a preventative pill 30 minutes before boarding or the trip will be miserable.
