Mirissa genuinely lives up to the photographs. It features a sweeping crescent of golden sand lined with coconut palms and warm turquoise water. From November to April, Blue Whales regularly appear just a few kilometres offshore.
Many cheap whale watching operators are unethical, choosing to chase and crowd the animals with noisy engines. Always research and book an eco-certified operator who follows the Sri Lanka Tourism distance guidelines.
Do not underestimate the ocean swell. If you are prone to motion sickness, take a preventative pill 30 minutes before boarding or the trip will be miserable.
Golden sands and coconut palms of Mirissa Beach
Mirissa is excellent from November to April. This window offers calm seas and the optimal conditions for finding whales.
Dry season brings calm seas and peak whale watching. Sightings are most reliable from December through March.
Expect heavy rain and rough seas. Whale watching stops entirely and swimming is not recommended.
Local tip: For whale watching, boats depart early around 6am. The sea is calmest in the morning, which makes for a much better experience.
Take the train to Weligama, which sits just 10 minutes from Mirissa. It is a beautiful coastal route along the Indian Ocean.
Expect to pay 45 to 65 EUR from Colombo Airport via the Southern Expressway. The drive takes about three hours.
