Colonial Charm

Galle: Sri Lanka's most charming colonial fort town

A UNESCO World Heritage site where history meets the Indian Ocean. Enjoy cobbled streets, heritage villas, and stunning sunsets.

Best time: Nov to April Avg temp: 28°C Vibe: Colonial Heritage Train: 2hr from Colombo Budget: From 30 EUR/night

Why Visit Galle?

Galle is unlike anywhere else in Sri Lanka. It is a beautifully preserved Dutch colonial town enclosed within massive 17th-century ramparts. Cobbled streets, whitewashed churches, boutique cafes, and art galleries pack this compact peninsula.

Europeans tend to fall completely in love with Galle. It has a specific magic created by the extraordinary history and the warm evening light on old stone walls. It is also the perfect base for the south coast, with Unawatuna just 10 minutes away and Mirissa 45 minutes east.

Do not buy gems from the street touts inside the fort walls. They often sell overpriced colored glass to tourists. Also, avoid eating all your meals inside the fort if you are on a budget. Walk 10 minutes into the main Galle town for authentic rice and curry at a fraction of the cost.
